Gwinnett County School District logo

Accountability and flexibility are hallmarks of Gwinnett County Public Schools' success. Key to that success is ensuring that each school community understands the progress being made by its schools, as well as what plans will drive improvement. Each school creates a collaborative Local School Plan for Improvement (LSPI) to increase student achievement results, with targeted goals based on the four strategic priorities within the district’s Blueprint for the Future: Empathy, Equity, Effectiveness, and Excellence. All schools across the district will focus on goals 2A- Multi-tiered Systems of Support and 2B- Opportunity and Access. Additionally, schools are required to select one goal from each of the other strategic priorities. LSPI goals are dynamic, like our schools, and are updated to reflect changes that occur in schools. Multiple data points are used to determine areas needing improvement and to identify specific, measurable, annual objectives. Schools then determine how to use research-based strategies to achieve these goals, using flexibility as needed. The LSPI development process involves teachers, parents, students, and community members, so the entire school community has the opportunity to be involved in conversations about school improvement.

  3. Continue to utilize the Tiger Den structure to provide SEL Opportunities
  4. Modify master schedule to create Connections Time of 15 minutes to implement daily SEL engagement activities
  5. Create SEL lessons for staff to implement with students through the following areas - Classrooms, Tiger Dens, Health Special, and Counseling Lessons
  6. Implement more school-wide "Check Ins" via surveys, since the EES Survey is only done once a year.

Equity 2.A - Multi-tiered System of Supports

MTSS Enhancement

For healthy learning and development to take place, students must feel safe and supported across all domains of development—academic, cognitive, social-emotional, ethical, identity, and physical/mental health. This is more likely to happen when learning environments are structured in ways that support the whole child and are responsive to students’ strengths and needs.

  1. Analyze the structure and processes from the initial implementation of the MTSS process in School Year 2022-2023
  2. Create adjustments based on analysis of the previous year
  3. Define scope of adjustments - Academic Press and Supportive Community
  4. Align processes in which the processes/structures will operate, based on PBIS and GCPS AIR Rubric
  5. Create training plan for staff
  6. Present processes/structures to staff and implement
  7. Implement new processes/structures
  8. Create Interventions at each level of implementation - publish for staff knowledge
  9. Conduct monthly MTSS review using the AIR Rubric by the MTSS Team and the Administrative Team
  10. Conduct quarterly Data Chats with grade levels
  11. Review the process at monthly staff meetings

Equity 2.B - Opportunity and Access

Formative Assessments

Lovin teachers will develop a deeper understanding of matching specific instructional practices to student learning needs via small group instruction and strategic student independent learning tasks identified by effective formative assessments.  This approach will allow staff to address students' strengths and needs which will enable students to apply learning and strategies to solve real-world problems and explain and justify their thinking.

  1. Define the components that comprise effective Formative Assessments - link to the new EL Education Literacy Pilot
  2. Create a professional learning plan to build the capacity of teachers to implement effective Formative Assessments
  3. Conduct monthly training for staff in creating effective Formative Assessments and utilizing the data for strategic instruction
  4. Conduct Learning Walks to observe Formative Assessment (Individual Teachers, Grade Level Teams, Instructional Leadership Team, Administrative Team, GCPS Experts)
  5. Provide opportunity for CLT's to share work samples of Formative Assessments and provide feedback/share ideas to build capacity via Working on the Work (W.o.W) Days.

Effectiveness 3.A - Results-Based Evaluation System

Small Group Strategic Instruction and Integration of STEM/STEAM purposefully into content areas

Small group strategic instruction and integration of STEM/STEAM will be Lovin’s Academic Press focus points for this school year.  Teachers will use both approaches to personalize instruction and engage each and every student.  The goal is to require students to apply strategies to solve real-world problems that support learning AKS Content and develop critical and creative thinking skills.

  1. Create monthly Working on the Work (W.O.W.) Days to Define, design, and implement structures to facilitate small group instruction and STEM/STEAM integration
  2. Establish STEM/STEAM Vertical Teams and give them charge to facilitate the planning and implementation of STEM/STEAM Integration lessons
  3. Develop a STEM/STEAM Integration Block into the daily master schedule
  4. Utilize one Just in Time professional learning/training per month to focus on small group instruction and integrating STEM/STEAM into the AKS Curriculum to provide engaging and strategic instruction for students
  5. Identify one quarterly CLT planning session to allow teachers to effectively plan and implement STEM/STEAM PBLs
  6. Conduct monthly learning walks with different professional learning teams to develop a culture of learning from our peers to increase effectiveness of this instructional approach.
