Accountability and flexibility are hallmarks of Gwinnett County Public Schools' success. Key to that success is ensuring that each school community understands the progress being made by its schools, as well as what plans will drive improvement. Each school creates a collaborative Local School Plan for Improvement (LSPI) to increase student achievement results, with targeted goals based on the four strategic priorities within the district’s Blueprint for the Future: Empathy, Equity, Effectiveness, and Excellence. All schools across the district will focus on goals 2A- Multi-tiered Systems of Support and 2B- Opportunity and Access. Additionally, schools are required to select one goal from each of the other strategic priorities. LSPI goals are dynamic, like our schools, and are updated to reflect changes that occur in schools. Multiple data points are used to determine areas needing improvement and to identify specific, measurable, annual objectives. Schools then determine how to use research-based strategies to achieve these goals, using flexibility as needed. The LSPI development process involves teachers, parents, students, and community members, so the entire school community has the opportunity to be involved in conversations about school improvement.

Summerour Middle School believes that academic press cannot take place without supportive community.  We acknowledge the importance of overall wellbeing for students and staff in supporting high levels of learning. 

  1. Support well-being, teacher retention, and teacher learning through robust staff development.
  2. Engage students in curricular and co-curricular activities, and Character Strong advisement to improve SEL.

Equity 2.A - Multi-tiered System of Supports

Summerour Middle School is committed to identifying and removing barriers to success for our students.  This includes matching student needs with the necessary support in literacy, numeracy, and behavior within a tiered system.

  1. Implement a strong MTSS system for Tier 1-Tier 3, including interventions that reduce the number of students scoring at the Beginning Level on the Georgia Milestones.
  2. Reduce the number of students scoring three or more grade levels below in iReady Math and Reading, while increasing the number of students achieving typical and stretch growth.

Equity 2.B - Opportunity and Access

Summerour Middle School students deserve the very best education.  This includes access to a variety of programs, curriculum, and experiences that help develop well-rounded, critically-minded learners.

  1. Improve student learning through the IB (International Baccalaureate) MYP (Middle Years Programme) Framework, including Approaches to Teaching and Learning, conceptual understanding, and authentic assessment.

Summerour students will be ready for high school, and in turn have tools for Postsecondary and/or Global Workforce Readiness.  This includes having access to high quality instruction every day in all IB subject areas, increased literacy growth for all students, and opportunities to for biliteracy.

Family Engagement/Building Parent Capacity -

We will build our parents' capacity to support their children's academic achievement by implementing the activities identified in The Plan/The Promise.
