Accountability and flexibility are hallmarks of Gwinnett County Public Schools' success. Key to that success is ensuring that each school community understands the progress being made by its schools, as well as what plans will drive improvement. Each school creates a collaborative Local School Plan for Improvement (LSPI) to increase student achievement results, with targeted goals based on the four strategic priorities within the district’s Blueprint for the Future: Empathy, Equity, Effectiveness, and Excellence. All schools across the district will focus on goals 2A- Multi-tiered Systems of Support and 2B- Opportunity and Access. Additionally, schools are required to select one goal from each of the other strategic priorities. LSPI goals are dynamic, like our schools, and are updated to reflect changes that occur in schools. Multiple data points are used to determine areas needing improvement and to identify specific, measurable, annual objectives. Schools then determine how to use research-based strategies to achieve these goals, using flexibility as needed. The LSPI development process involves teachers, parents, students, and community members, so the entire school community has the opportunity to be involved in conversations about school improvement.

Simonton Elementary School will increase the cultural competence and proficiency of our organization and individual staff members to improve service delivery, strengthen programs, and enhance engagement across the full spectrum of our diverse community.

Simonton Elementary School will create systems, structures, and processes that institutionalize and operationalize the GCPS definition of cultural competence:  Recognizing, valuing, and leveraging differences in order to interact effectively and better serve our students, staff, and community.

 

  1. Simonton ES will host school-wide events (E.G. Black History Program, International Night, etc.) to celebrate the diversity of the school community.

  2. Social Emotional Lessons will be taught in classrooms a minimum of 30 minutes each week.
  3. The Simonton ES staff will participate in Restorative Practice training and actively implement conflict resolution strategies with students.

Equity 2.A - Multi-tiered System of Supports

Simonton Elementary School will build capacity to support and fully integrate non-academic tier 1 structures and processes such as school-wide positive behavior interventions and supports (PBIS), SEL curriculum/competencies, attendance campaigns, school counseling programs, etc.

 Formalize the academic response to intervention (RTI) process to reduce variability and improve the fidelity of implementation across all schools and grade bands.

  1. Simonton ES will ensure students in grades K-5 will participate in the universal screener iReady in the fall, winter and spring.  Student progress and growth will be monitored using this assessment.

  2. Teachers will use GCPS-approved resources to conduct progress monitoring and standardize the process.
  3. A designated date will be assigned to conduct Tier II data talks on each grade level K-5
  4. A school-wide Multi-tiered System of Support (MTSS) team will be established again this school year
  5. Staff will be trained to enter data into Synergy
  6. Student Support Team meetings will be conducted weekly at Simonton Elementary School
  7. A data chart will be used to track progress monitoring for each student in Tier II and Tier III (academic and behavior) and determine it's effectiveness for the student and to make adjustments as needed.

*Student progress will be monitored through the Simonton Elementary School MTSS monitoring tool.

*Student progress on iReady ELA and Math assessments will be analyzed by Simonton Elementary School teachers and administrators after each administration.

*The effectiveness of progress monitoring for each student will be entered into Synergy and shared at Student Support Team meetings.

*During Tier II data talks teachers and administrators will use student academic and behavior data to determine if interventions are successful or if other interventions should be considered.  A data sheet is used to track student progress.

 

Equity 2.B - Opportunity and Access

Simonton Elementary School will increase opportunities to learn through consistently implementing a high-quality curriculum that reflects grade level expectations, focusing on early literacy and the science of reading, and identifying subjects and grades to target for improvement through third-party curriculum audits.

 Simonton Elementary School will expand student opportunities to engage in and access high-quality, rigorous, and culturally relevant curriculum, advanced coursework (e.g., Advanced Placement and dual enrollment), and enrichment activities (e.g., the arts, gifted, STEM, career technical education).

  1. Simonton Elementary School will increase the number of students served in the gifted program.

  2. Increase opportunities and pathways for all students to demonstrate eligibility for gifted/talented programming.
  3. Simonton ES will increase the reading proficiency level of students in grades K-5 using the EL Education program.
  4. Simonton ES will increase the number of students successfully participating in ELA, Math Advanced Content classes in grades 3-5 and the Advanced Content Science class in 5th grade.
  5. Simonton Elementary school will offer Art and Music to all students in grades K-5 and STEM to all students in grades 1-5.  Students will also have an opportunity to participate in Robotics, Music and Art clubs
  6. A STEM camp will be offered to students in grades K-5.

*Simonton ES will evaluate the results of the Local School Plan for Improvement and the Results Based Evaluation System to drive continuous improvement and reflect world-class standards are defined in the current Board policy.

  2. Staff, community and student feedback will be used to determine goals, action steps and the implementation design.

Simonton Elementary School will cultivate school quality, climate and culture that is student-centered and committed to the success of each and every child.

Simonton Elementary School will promote a well-rounded education that includes a wide variety of academic, arts, and athletic programs across the K-12 continuum, including co-curricular and extra-curricular activities.

  1. Students at Simonton ES will be recognized for demonstrating desired behaviors through the Positive Behavior Incentive Support (PBIS) framework.
  2. Simonton ES will hold recognition programs for students demonstrating excellence in academics, attendance and behavior.

Family Engagement/Building Parent Capacity -

Simonton Elementary school will build our parents' capacity to support their children's academic achievement by implementing the activities identified in The Plan/The Promise.

  1. Play 2 Learn classes will be held each Tuesday and Thursday
  2. English classes will be offered to parents for whom English is a second language.
  3. Parent workshops on a variety of topics will be made available to parents (e.g. Math, Literacy, eCLASS, FOCUS, ESOL)
