Accountability and flexibility are hallmarks of Gwinnett County Public Schools' success. Key to that success is ensuring that each school community understands the progress being made by its schools, as well as what plans will drive improvement. Each school creates a collaborative Local School Plan for Improvement (LSPI) to increase student achievement results, with targeted goals based on the four strategic priorities within the district’s Blueprint for the Future: Empathy, Equity, Effectiveness, and Excellence. All schools across the district will focus on goals 2A- Multi-tiered Systems of Support and 2B- Opportunity and Access. Additionally, schools are required to select one goal from each of the other strategic priorities. LSPI goals are dynamic, like our schools, and are updated to reflect changes that occur in schools. Multiple data points are used to determine areas needing improvement and to identify specific, measurable, annual objectives. Schools then determine how to use research-based strategies to achieve these goals, using flexibility as needed. The LSPI development process involves teachers, parents, students, and community members, so the entire school community has the opportunity to be involved in conversations about school improvement.

Empathy 1.B - Staff and Student Well Being

The well being of staff and students is the essence and soul of the school.  When the needs of staff and students are at the forefront, we are attending to the needs of the WHOLE person.  This creates the tone and sets the culture for teaching and learning to flourish, allowing educational transformation to take place.

Equity 2.A - Multi-tiered System of Supports

Summerour Middle School is committed to identifying and removing barriers to success for our students.  This includes matching student needs with the necessary support in literacy, numeracy, and behavior within a tiered system.  

  1. Implement a strong MTSS system for Tier 1-Tier 3 to reduce the number of students scoring at the Beginning Level on the Georgia Milestones.  This includes a specific focus on our ML students (including those with IEPs) in the area of:
    1. Literacy/Language Acquisition - implementation of conversation-based instruction and the WIDA framework
    2. Numeracy - intentional and targeted skills-based interventions to support grade level and vertical AKS
  2. Build and strengthen student confidence through collaborative conversations and the use of Cognitive Academic Language Proficiency (CALP) in the classroom. 
  3. Build and strengthen teacher confidence through knowledge and practice of the IC (Instructional Conversation) framework, while witnessing the visible success in students.

Equity 2.B - Opportunity and Access

Summerour Middle School students deserve a high quality education.  This includes access to variety of programs, curriculum, and the experiences that help develop well-rounded, critically-minded learners.

  1. Increase the number of students scoring at the Proficient and Distinguished Level on the Georgia Milestones in all content areas through strong implementation of Tier 1 Instruction through:
    1. The IB Middle Years Programme, including Approaches to Teaching and Learning, conceptual understanding, and authentic assessment
    2. Gradual Release combined with the 16 Elements of Explicit Instruction
    3. Use of conversation-based instruction through (ICs)

Family Engagement/Building Parent Capacity -

We will build our parents' capacity to support their children's academic achievement by implementing the activities identified in The Plan/The Promise.

  1. Increase number of parents who visit and engage with the Parent Center to attend workshops, receive one-on-one support, and who participate in parent support activities.  
  2. Increase the use of engagement tools, such as Parent Square to improve communication between home and school.
