Accountability and flexibility are hallmarks of Gwinnett County Public Schools' success. Key to that success is ensuring that each school community understands the progress being made by its schools, as well as what plans will drive improvement. Each school creates a collaborative Local School Plan for Improvement (LSPI) to increase student achievement results, with targeted goals based on the four strategic priorities within the district’s Blueprint for the Future: Empathy, Equity, Effectiveness, and Excellence. All schools across the district will focus on goals 2A- Multi-tiered Systems of Support and 2B- Opportunity and Access. Additionally, schools are required to select one goal from each of the other strategic priorities. LSPI goals are dynamic, like our schools, and are updated to reflect changes that occur in schools. Multiple data points are used to determine areas needing improvement and to identify specific, measurable, annual objectives. Schools then determine how to use research-based strategies to achieve these goals, using flexibility as needed. The LSPI development process involves teachers, parents, students, and community members, so the entire school community has the opportunity to be involved in conversations about school improvement.

Empathy 1.B - Staff and Student Well Being

The Woodward Mill Elementary School mission is to achieve academic and social excellence through quality instruction that promotes lifelong learning. Our mission is also to promote staff and student well-being. We believe it is our responsibility to ensure that each and every student feels safe and has a sense of belonging so they can fully engage in learning. It is also our responsibility to ensure that teachers have the support needed to create a positive learning environment.

1.   Woodward Mill Elementary staff members will be provided Professional Learning to implement and continue Morning Meetings (MM) and Social Emotional Learning (SEL). 

2.     Morning Meetings are a time for students and teachers to strengthen their relationships through greetings, engaging activities, a warm welcome, and daily goal setting.

·       Social Emotional Learning lessons will be taught to each and every student at the onset of Bear Time with a focus on an SEL topic such as kindness, respect, etc.

3.     As part of Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports, students and/or teachers will:

·       Be recognized on the weekly announcements by way of B3 Points and can earn prizes.

·       There will be monthly and/or seasonal celebrations for staff and students.

4.     Woodward Mill Elementary School will increase the number of clubs and activities for students.

5.     Woodward Mill Elementary School will continue to build workshops and family/community engagement.

6.     Woodward Mill Elementary School will be intentional about providing time for staff to utilize the Wellness Room.

7.     A new Kindergarten special will be added to the curriculum for each and every kindergarten student.

8.     A new STEM course special will be added to the curriculum for each and every student.

Equity 2.A - Multi-tiered System of Supports

Woodward Mill Elementary School is committed to providing an engaging and innovative learning environment for each and every student to ensure improved student achievement and student well-being. We believe a well-defined and executed multi-tiered system of supports (MTSS) must be in place in order to reach and teach every child. 

Woodward Mill Elementary School will work diligently to understand the individual needs of our students and meet those needs through enrichment and remediation by tapping into a comprehensive set of interventions during the school day. Such interventions include iReady screeners, and classroom formative/summative assessments. 

1.     Woodward Mill Elementary School teachers will participate in ongoing training on how to effectively interpret and use our multi-tiered system of supports data-driven prevention framework (screening and progress monitoring) to identify students who may:

·       Be at risk for expected learning outcomes.

·       Have well-being needs.

·       Have behavioral concerns that impact learning.

·       Need enrichment extensions.

2.     Through Professional Learning Communities, teachers will deliver high Tier 1 level instruction and provide high-quality feedback.

3.     Students will consistently have opportunities for remediation and enrichment based on their individual needs during our daily scheduled Bear Time. Qualifying students will receive more intensive Tier II and Tier III interventions in addition to the small group instruction provided daily by the classroom teacher.

4.     Identified students will benefit from receiving tutoring in ELA and/or math during the school day from external tutoring companies contracted by Gwinnett County Public Schools.

5.     Staff will also participate in training by school personnel on how to ensure at least 95% participation rate on the student screener.

Equity 2.B - Opportunity and Access

At Woodward Mill Elementary School, we believe each and every student deserves access to a high-quality curriculum, rigorous/relevant coursework, and enrichment activities.

 

Woodward Mill Elementary School will provide innovative learning opportunities for students to engage in high-quality and relevant coursework including Gifted, our Multi-lingual (ML) program, and our new STEM course. We will provide:

·       Timely screening and feedback regarding Kindergarten Readiness Entry Profile (KREP).

·       Professional Learning for all K-5 content areas.

·       Professional Learning our English Language Arts (ELA) Curriculum. 

·       Increased Gifted referral and identification process by utilizing additional identification instruments to expand access for gifted students.

·       Committee meetings focused on providing enrichment, culturally relevant activities, and events.

·       Building parent capacity through both parent workshops and Play2Learn classes that provide a program for children ages birth to 5 for the academic school year.

·       Additional enrichment clubs i.e., Tech club, Robotics, Thinking Skills club, Cubs Care, etc.

·       Woodward Mill Elementary School will work to reinstitute Joyful Learning in Kindergarten.

·       Woodward Mill Elementary School will establish a Guided Play space for Kindergarten and First grade.

Effectiveness 3.A - Results-Based Evaluation System

The Woodward Mill Elementary School mission is to achieve academic and social excellence through quality instruction that promotes lifelong learning. Our mission is also to promote academic excellence. We believe it is our responsibility to ensure that each and every student maintains and excels to his or her full potential by providing them with engaging and rigorous learning opportunities geared towards their individual strengths and areas of growth.

1.     Woodward Mill Elementary teachers will participate in weekly staff development sessions focused on teaching and learning to increase student achievement.

2.     Teachers will formatively assess students frequently to identify their individual needs (enrichment and/or remediation) and provide resources to support each student.

3.     Student learning will be individualized. Students will have multiple opportunities for enrichment and/or remediation lessons.

4.     Teachers will have high expectations and provide quality and engaging instruction to each and every student. Teachers will follow a clear and concise instructional framework discussed during weekly planning known as Professional Learning Communities (PLC). Daily monitoring of instruction will occur, and ongoing feedback will be provided to teachers to ensure students’ needs are met.

Woodward Mill Elementary school will increase the percent of students scoring in the proficient and distinguished categories on the Georgia Milestones.

At Woodward Mill Elementary School, we believe our parents, teachers, and community members are crucial partners in maximizing the student experience and communication is key in making sure all informed are productive partners.

Woodward Mill Elementary School will complete the following tasks to ensure world-class communication:
