Gwinnett County School District logo

Accountability and flexibility are hallmarks of Gwinnett County Public Schools' success. Key to that success is ensuring that each school community understands the progress being made by its schools, as well as what plans will drive improvement. Each school creates a collaborative Local School Plan for Improvement (LSPI) to increase student achievement results, with targeted goals based on the four strategic priorities within the district’s Blueprint for the Future: Empathy, Equity, Effectiveness, and Excellence. All schools across the district will focus on goals 2A- Multi-tiered Systems of Support and 2B- Opportunity and Access. Additionally, schools are required to select one goal from each of the other strategic priorities. LSPI goals are dynamic, like our schools, and are updated to reflect changes that occur in schools. Multiple data points are used to determine areas needing improvement and to identify specific, measurable, annual objectives. Schools then determine how to use research-based strategies to achieve these goals, using flexibility as needed. The LSPI development process involves teachers, parents, students, and community members, so the entire school community has the opportunity to be involved in conversations about school improvement.

Equity 2.A - Multi-tiered System of Supports

GSMST has a long history of student academic success, and it is our vision to continue this trajectory to ensure all students are prepared for college and career. We understand that while our students made the same choice to attend GSMST, it does not make them the same type of learner. Students at our school have unique academic needs and through several support systems in place, we plan to ensure these needs are met throughout the year.

In addition to academic priorities, GSMST thrives because of the collective efforts of dedicated students and staff members. The students and staff at GSMST are invaluable, and we are committed to ensuring their wellbeing through a focus on self-care, physical and mental health, and social-emotional learning.

1. Academic Support

Student Data. Formative and summative assessments will be administered throughout each instructional unit, and the data will be used to determine the remediation and reassessment that takes place in the classroom to support student learning of AKS.

Weekly CLT Meetings. Teachers will work collaboratively in weekly CLT meetings to plan high quality STEM instruction, which prioritizes student engagement, student interest, and problem solving through cross-curricular PBL’s. Additionally, teachers will analyze common assessment data weekly, in order to identify student needs and plan for effective remediation, reassessment and enrichment before unit summative assessments.

Professional Learning. Teachers will continue to strengthen their toolkits by attending school-wide professional learning, department professional learning, and district professional learning on the following areas of focus: Quality Tier 1 Instruction, STEM Instruction, and Utilizing Assessments to Drive Remediation and Reassessment.

2. Supportive Community Support

School Wellness Program. The school will continue to support,  improve, and expand our wellness program for students and staff. We will offer several school events, both during and after the school day, to target self-care, physical and mental health, and social-emotional well being. We will continue to integrate wellness priorities into the school day during 8th period FLEX time, in addition to supporting events after school.

Advisement Program. All students will engage in weekly advisement lessons in the areas of: Counseling, College and Career Skills, PBIS, and Social Emotional Learning.

Staff and Student Recognition Program. Students and staff will be recognized on a regular basis for their work in supporting a positive, respectful, and high achieving academic environment. The recognitions will take place in partnership with our PBIS program schoolwide. These recognitions will include student to staff Bravos, staff to staff Bravos, staff to student Bravos, and a monthly staff STEMovator award.

Equity 2.B - Opportunity and Access

The career landscape in which our students enter after college is constantly changing, and therefore we need to ensure our programs are growing and evolving to prepare all students for success in their futures. Our goal is to expand and improve STEM opportunities at GSMST, so students have access to high quality, rigorous, and culturally relevant curriculum, advanced coursework and enrichment activities throughout the year. We aim to ensure all students have multiple options after graduation based on their demonstrated knowledge, skills, abilities, and interests. Through our STEM focused, innovative academic programs, we will continue to enhance our practices to support the changing needs of our students each year.

STEM Recertification. GSMST will embark on the recertification process this school year as the goal is to be recertified during the 2025-26 SY. Teachers will continue to expand STEM planning, carry out interdisciplinary PBL’s, and strengthen relationships with community partners this school year.

PBL Requirements: All students will experience schoolwide PBL's two times per year in each course. For Math, Science, and CTAE courses, students will carry out PBL’s that are interdisciplinary and connected to grade appropriate math content.

STEM Opportunities. GSMST will continue to offer multiple STEM learning opportunities that enrich learning during class time and also extend beyond the classroom. Students will participate in our four year Partnership and Internship program, which includes 9th grade Speaker Series, 10th grade STEM site visits, 11th grade JFE and 12th grade SCE. Additional STEM opportunities include, but are not limited to: STEM Research, Robotics, CTSO’s, Dual Enrollment, CTAE Pathways, STEM Clubs and Competitions, and advanced AP Math and Science opportunities and requirements.
